Stay Healthy Question And Answer
How can i go vegan, but stay healthy?
Im already a vegitarian but I want to go vegan! I feel so bad for those innocent animals. To me, it is cannibolism. We are eating other animals, WE ARE ANIMALS TOO! I know it isn't but that is how i feel. I really want to go vegan, but just can't seem to find what I would need to stay healthy. Please help! Thanks!

soy.
I went vegan and i just went along with it as i progressed... i googled sooo much information before i started though.
Being Vegan means you miss out on a few IMPORTANT nutrients:
Vitamin B12 - This can be taken from a few products that contain soya, soya milk been a good example
Vitamin D - This can be taken in by a small amount of products but best to get from the sun
Calcium - Not sure about this one since i've never had a calcium problem since i always have soya milk
Iodine - This one is important and is best obtained from Kelp Seaweed (this is really tasty by the way) but if you live in the USA then you can get iodinzed salt which give you the iodine needed.
I went vegan for health benefits and its really helped me alot.
Good Luck
Um... Well while it is possible to stay healthy being a vegan, it is REALLY hard. As a vegan will have trouble getting much of the protein, vitamins and minerals that us...(um I don't want to say normal...how about omnivores, get)
Okay now that the answer part is done, here are my opinions.
Honestly if you want to go vegan, do it for a good reason. Not because "You feel bad for innocent animals." I mean do you really think that a human life is less important than an animal life? Also with this logic, what about the poor plants you eat? How do you know that they do not feel pain as their stalk is brutally dismembered from their roots? because they do not have mouths and vocal cords to scream out in pain? Also with this same logic do you think that diabetics should stop taking their insulin (some insulin comes from pigs)? The examples of drugs and everyday products that come from animals could go on and on. Well, while I completely respect your opinion, I guess I am just a big confused with your logic. But if you do go vegan, I wish you the best of luck with it, be sure to take a multivitamin, and protein supplement. You will probably need it.
Wow the 12yo girl who is vegan. I KNOW that is not healthy. During puberty you have higher nurtitional needs. The lack of fat in her diet can actually be harmful during puberty. It can lead to a delay in puberty, especially the begining of menstration. This girl needs to speak to her doctor about ways she can get the nutreants she needs, and if it is possible to do so on her current vegan diet.
The answer to the guy above me's LOGIC:
When we talk about the ethics of avoiding meat, what we really are talking about is that it is morally wrong to kill a sentient, conscious animal merely for the consumption of its flesh. Nowhere in the vegetarian's "code of ethics" does it state that we should not be eating salad (or other DNA-based substances) because, although plants contain DNA, plants are generally recognized as NOT conscious or sentient beings.
I hope that explains to many people who say that we shouldnt eat plants... it just anoys me when someone comes out thinking they are all smart saying a plant is alive because we vegans/vegetarians eat plants... so for the guy above me try reading my answer and understand it.
I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "what I would need to stay healthy". I've been vegan my whole life, and have never had any problem finding food at stores, full meals in restaurants, etc. I've also never taken a vitamin or supplement. If it was true that you had to do so, vegans wouldn't be the healthiest people in the world, would they?
Wal-Mart carries soymilk, and you can find many vegan items (like coconut ice cream-yum) at Whole Foods, if there's one near where you live.
