Keeping Fit Question And Answer

How much does keeping fit and healthy determine how able you are when your old?

Ok so there's a teacher in school who is nearly 70. I know that he's kept himself fit because he used to be a P.E teacher at my school and he only retired about 3 years ago (He still teachers part time and covers lessons so I've seen him quite alot) And apparently he still goes jogging but I'm not sure if that's true. I know that 70 isn't that old but my Grandad is the same age and he isn't as energetic as him. I mean he can get around and look after himself and stuff but he has defiantly slowed down and he retired years ago. And I have never ever seen or heard about him jogging! I'm not even sure that he even can! My question is do you have to keep as fit and healthy as possible all your life to be as able as this teacher is now at his age? Or is it just luck because I've heard of people like the 101 year old man that ran the london marathon that admitted himself that he was just lucky?

proper diet and sufficient exercise are very important to keeping young.
it affects you hugely
Some of it is luck and genetics, but if you do want to do stuff when you're old, you do have to keep it up. Use it or lose it.
The only luck involved is in your genetics. You can do a triathlon when your 70 or 90 IF you make an effort to eat right and exercise each day of your life. Certain inherited conditions can make this impossible or just extremely difficult, but beyond that, the skies the limit. Fitness is not just attained, it must be maintained throughout your lifetime. And the bigger effort you make, the longer your life will be.
A lot of it is genetic related. The main problem among us all is free radical cell damage. This is an ongoing event within the body. More free radicals are created when the body is under stress..that's stress of any kind. Stress of debts, loss of a loved one or a strenuous workout. These free radicals want to be normal cells but they're missing a component to be accepted among our cell family. In order to be normal they will steal an oxygen molecule from a good cell..when they do that the original cell dies, but it doesn't just disappear it becomes a cell of destruction. Over time they can mutate and go on to create many problems for us. Such as a disease process, cancer, organ failure, etc. So if you're into fitness at an early age and do it for life and you're diet is rich in antioxidants (the main defender of free radical cell damage) at 70 your biological age may be that of someone in their late 40's..We all have far more control over how we will look and feel in later life then most are aware of..if you read my profile one of my statements is "do it for life, your life" without going into this much detail in that profile, this is some of what I was referring to...So, if you haven't already...start a program and never stop, as best you can...you won't be sick very often, when you do it won't last long..keep the body fed with the proper fuel and it will pay you back with dividends of health..each day you eat right and workout you're making a deposit into your health account...when a cold hits you can make withdrawals from that so it won't really get that bad.. I don't know the fitness and diet routine of the 70 year old, but I'll bet he knows about the cell damage I'm referring to...And yes, some can do most of this without really trying very hard, most of us can't.
